“Shadowcasting:
An Introduction to the Art of Flyfishing”
John Dietsch taught Brad Pitt how to cast a fly line to prepare for the
young actor’s role in “A River Runs Through It.” Now Mr. Dietsch brings
his same fluid style of teaching to the rest of us in the new book,
“Shadowcasting: An Introduction to the Art of Flyfishing.” Known in
flyfishing and filmmaking circles as the Flyfishing Production
Coordinator on the making of the film “A River Runs Through It,”
Dietsch teams up with longtime friend and Roaring Fork River guide Gary
Hubbell to relate the proven techniques that he used to teach
flyfishing to Brad Pitt and the other actors in the film. The book is
filled with alternately humorous and deeply touching anecdotes about
the authors’ fishing experiences, including several never-before-told
stories about the filming of Norman Maclean’s famous flyfishing novel.
The book includes a 16-page gallery section with brilliant color photos
by co-author Gary Hubbell, as well as several incredible photos by John
Kelly from the set of “A River Runs Through It.” The book totals 208
pages and retails for $21.
Says
co-author John Dietsch, “This book is for the person who has always
been curious about flyfishing, but has never tried it, or has only been
flyfishing a couple of times. There are other introductory flyfishing
books on the shelves, but I found most of them to be practically
unreadable, they’re so boring. Gary and I have found that our teaching
techniques seem to make sense to the thousands of people we’ve taught
to flyfish, so we tried to write about those same techniques in an
mellow, entertaining fashion.”
“This
book really gives the feeling of being on the river with a rod in your
hand. It doesn’t get bogged down in overly technical details. Above
all, I really like John’s stories. He writes beautifully,” says
co-author Gary Hubbell. Colorado readers agree. Now going into its
second printing, the book just won a 2000 First Place Colorado Book
Award in the Sports and Recreation category. The award was presented by
the Colorado Center for the Book, the state's affiliate of the Library
of Congress.
