Clinetop Press is known for its
humane training books on Labrador retriever hunting dogs, its
award-winning instructional fly fishing book, life-saving tips on
personal defense and self-protection, including prevention of
identity theft, and short stories of experiences in the wilds of
the West.
“The Labrador Shooting Dog” by Mike Gould, published in 1999, has
become known for turning the world of hunting dog training upside
down. Instead of advocating electronic collars and harsh aversion
training techniques, Mike Gould espouses building a strong working
relationship with a dog for maximum hunting success. In its third
printing, “The Labrador Shooting Dog” has become a classic work on
training Labrador retrievers for waterfowl and upland bird
hunting.
“The Pointing Labrador” by Paul and
Julie Knutson is another ground-breaking hunting dog training book
from Clinetop Press. The Knutsons have trained dozens of Grand
Master Pointing Retrievers and detail their award-winning dog
training techniques in this book.
Both books feature
gorgeous photos of black, yellow, and chocolate Labrador
retrievers hunting pheasants, ducks, geese, blue grouse, and
quail.
“Shadowcasting: An Introduction to the Art of Flyfishing,” by John
Dietsch and Gary Hubbell, is an award-winning instructional book
for the beginning fly-fishing enthusiast. Mr. Dietsch was the fly
fishing production coordinator on the making of the film, “A River
Runs Through It,” directed by Robert Redford and starring Brad
Pitt, Tom Skerritt, and Craig Sheffer. Robert Redford calls the
book “an impressive work.” Co-author Gary Hubbell is a long-time
Colorado flyfishing guide on the Roaring Fork and Crystal rivers
near Aspen, known for his top-notch instructional program for
beginning flyfishers. The book features beautiful photographs of
anglers on Western rivers, including the Roaring Fork, Frying Pan,
Crystal, and Yellowstone rivers, and brilliant photos of rainbow,
cutthroat, German brown, and brook trout, as well as stunning
original photographs from the filming of A River Runs Through
It, including a wonderful picture of Brad Pitt.
Shadowcasting
includes co-author John Dietsch’s moving anecdotes about his
experiences filming the movie A River Runs Through It in
Montana, including his role as stunt man for Brad Pitt, his
discussions with Robert Redford about accurately depicting fly
fishing in 1930’s Montana, and teaching Brad Pitt how to cast a
fly line on the Santa Monica pier in 1991. Shadowcasting includes
easy-to-follow fly fishing techniques for dry fly casting, nymph
fishing, fishing knots, fly selection, catch and release ethic,
fly fishing equipment, and fly tying.
“Eyes Wide Open: Bodyguard Strategies for Self Protection” by
Kristie Kilgore, goes far beyond the typical self-defense book.
Ms. Kilgore advocates a pro-active awareness of everyday
situations and surroundings to stay safe in a dangerous world. Ms.
Kilgore writes extensively about techniques for preventing
identity theft, and is a pioneer in the field of women’s self
defense and self defense weapons. Ms. Kilgore has extensively
studied bodyguards and the strategies they use to protect clients,
and has combined these techniques with her own extensive study of
martial arts. Though the self-defense techniques explained in
“Eyes Wide Open” are superb, the book focuses on personal
protection, which seeks to avoid the need to use self-defense
techniques entirely. This book is a must-read for men and women of
all ages.
“Plateaus of Destiny” by Mike Gould is a book by a master
storyteller who writes of his experiences training Labrador
retrievers and English pointers from the high mountains of
Colorado to the Snake River Canyon in Idaho. Mike’s short stories
talk of epic blue grouse and chukar hunts, good pheasant dogs,
sturdy mountain horses, favorite rifles and shotguns, monster mule
deer bucks, and growing up money-poor but rich in life experience
in the Colorado Rockies. Plateaus of Destiny is a favorite
read for upland bird hunters, Labrador retriever and English
pointer enthusiasts, and followers of Mike Gould’s revolutionary
dog training techniques.
